Chapter 5 Sentry
Chapter 5 Sentry
The girl wore a clean, light gray linen dress with a thin brown rope tied around her waist, outlining her slender figure.
She clearly hadn't done any hard labor; her light tan skin had a radiant glow.
Luo Xu had met this girl once before; she was Sarah, Galon's youngest daughter.
"Father, I've brought you the horse."
Sarah handed the reins to Galon, then smiled sweetly at the young men before her.
Those young men who had been hunching over suddenly straightened their backs.
Sarah was the most beautiful woman in the village, and the dream girl of almost every young man.
"Lord Galon, I believe I am capable of fulfilling your perfect plan." It was Lowell, the red-haired youth, who spoke first.
The other young people were not to be outdone and pushed forward one step at a time.
Sarah stood beside Galon, simply smiling sweetly, like a blooming flower.
Luo Xu looked at the eager young people, then at the perfectly timed smile on Sarah's face.
Why was it Sarah who delivered the horse?
A thought flashed through Luo Xu's mind: he vaguely sensed that Sarah's appearance was too coincidental.
Galon quickly decided on the candidate: a red-haired youth named "Lowell".
He originally wanted to add another one, but Walter reminded him that it would be more discreet to act alone.
"Walter, I don't need you to do anything now. Go do your own thing," Galon said.
"Yes, Mr. Walter."
After bidding farewell to Galon, Walter prepared to leave with Rosu.
Just as Luo Xu turned around, he keenly noticed that Galon gave Sarah a wink.
"Rossiy".
Sarah's voice came from behind her.
Luo Xu turned around and saw Sarah pointing at the spear and kite-shaped shield in his hand, laughing, "You look pretty cool like this."
Luo Xu was slightly taken aback, then smiled politely and said, "Thank you, I think so too."
After he finished speaking, he started walking and followed Walter.
After walking on the muddy road for a while, Luo Xu gripped his spear and broke the silence.
"Captain Walter, am I supposed to train next?"
"Training?" Walter chuckled dryly and shook his head. "There's no time for training. Those bandits could come back at any time."
Luo Xu was quite surprised by Walter's words: "But I've never even touched a spear before, and I can count the number of times I've fought someone on one hand. If I were to face bandits..."
"You're overthinking it," Walter interrupted him. "If you encounter a robber, just grip your spear and stab him as hard as you can."
"This..." Luo Xu's lips twitched, and he was speechless at his captain's words.
However, it's understandable, since people tend to speak as bluntly as possible during tense times.
Luo Xu followed Walter to the south side of the village.
"Your main task is reconnaissance and vigilance. If you encounter any unusual situations, never go to investigate alone."
"I understand, Captain."
After giving some instructions, Walter handed Luo Xu a bone whistle and told him to blow it if he saw any bandits.
Finally, Walter pointed to a militiaman patrolling not far away and said:
"If there's anything you still don't understand, you can ask him—remember to call him 'senpai' (senior)."
He left after saying that.
Luo Xu took a deep breath, stepped forward and said to the patrolling militiaman, "Senior, my name is Luo Xusi."
"Jeffrey."
The militiaman didn't turn his head; his eyes remained fixed on the distant forest.
Luo Xu didn't ask any more questions. He started to look into the distance and around from time to time, just like Jeffrey.
To the south of Lantas Village lies a vast plain. Luo Xu's gaze swept across the golden wheat fields, and unconsciously lingered on his own patch of wheat, where green and yellow met.
It stood out conspicuously among the golden waves of wheat.
The wheat fields are nearing harvest time, and the entire field is bent low by the heavy ears of wheat.
Luo Xu, however, could not feel happy.
It is estimated that in another three or four days, the wheat field will be fully ripe, and then those bandits will come to collect "protection money".
Three or four days is too short; it would be difficult for others to notice the unusual situation in Lantas Village.
I just hope that the red-haired youth can reach Orila safely.
Luo Xu cleared his mind of his jumbled thoughts and focused his attention on the swaying wheat field and bushes.
Patrolling in the south is actually quite easy; you only need to keep an eye on a few bushes and wheat fields nearby.
At this moment, several villagers came out of the village, carrying farm tools, their faces filled with unease.
Jeffrey walked over to Luo Xu and said, "We need to expand the perimeter; these villagers need to go to work in the fields."
Luo Xu nodded and stood on a low slope as Jeffrey instructed.
This location is far from the village entrance, but offers a good view.
Just as Luo Xu was focused on keeping watch, two short figures entered his field of vision.
It's two little guys, Marcus and Leah.
"Uncle Ross, what are you doing?" Marcus asked curiously.
"I'm on lookout duty. A group of bad guys showed up near the village today," Luo Xu replied with a laugh.
"Were they driven away?"
Luo Xu glanced around and, seeing nothing amiss, replied, "Not yet. They're just hiding temporarily. They'll ambush us when we let our guard down."
Upon hearing this, Marcus stopped talking and obediently sat down on the ground with Lydia in his arms.
A group of children walked together to the grassy area in front of the village. They noticed Marcus and Leah there and occasionally let out a few snickers.
Marcus stood up and moved to a different position, using his body to block Leah.
Luo Xu glanced at the two of them and saw that Lia was covering her right cheek and not saying a word, which made him feel very distressed.
Because beneath Leah's delicate palm was an unsightly purplish-black birthmark.
Time flies, and the sun rises higher and higher.
The two little ones sat silently next to Luo Xu, and sometimes they would stand up and keep watch with him.
Just then, the sound of horses' hooves suddenly rang out from the village entrance.
Luo Xu looked in the direction of the sound and saw the red-haired youth, Luo Weier, riding a horse and heading south.
Oenila is east of Lantas village. Lowell probably took a detour from the south to avoid being discovered by bandits.
"Why are we setting off now?" Luo Xu was filled with doubt.
He believed it would be best to set off at dawn the next day, so that he could not only use the remaining darkness to avoid the robbers, but also make the journey smoother after sunrise.
But then I thought, the wheat will only be ripe for a few days. If we set off at dawn tomorrow, the bandits might have already looted everything and fled by the time the army arrives.
The red-haired youth, Lowell, was indeed a very good rider. Before long, Luo Xu could only see a tiny, fingernail-sized silhouette of his back.
Suddenly, Luo Xu seemed to see figures moving in the distant forest.
His pupils constricted, and he quickly shouted at Jeffrey:
"Jeffrey-senpai, I think I saw someone in that direction!"
Upon hearing this, Jeffrey immediately rushed to Luo Xu's side. He looked in the direction Luo Xu was pointing, stared for a while, and then shook his head blankly, saying:
"I didn't see anything. Are you just being too nervous?"
Luo Xu did not answer; he stared intently in that direction.
In the distant forest, several figures could be clearly seen running.
"Ding! Your reconnaissance skill experience +40."
"Ding! Your reconnaissance skill +1, now at level 3, 7/42 away from the next level."
