Chapter 4 Attack
Chapter 4 Attack
As the three crossed the border of the Land of Fire, the surrounding vegetation began to change noticeably.
The once lush broad-leaved forest gradually thinned out, replaced by large areas of low shrubs and exposed gray-black rocks. The humidity in the air was astonishingly high; every breath felt like swallowing icy mist.
The rain is getting heavier.
If the rain in Konoha is like continuous silk threads, then the rain in the Land of Rain is like countless fine steel needles, carrying a chill that penetrates to the bone, endlessly washing over this weeping land.
"The atmosphere here... is so oppressive."
As they walked, Minato Namikaze couldn't help but sigh softly.
He looked up, trying to find a ray of sunlight through the thick clouds, but all he could see was endless gloom.
"Don't look around."
Without turning his head, Fugaku Uchiha, who was leading the way, said coldly, "Entering the Land of Rain means we have stepped into the battlefield. Behind every stone here, there may be a rogue ninja who wants your head."
Minato Namikaze shrank back and gave an awkward laugh: "Fugaku-senpai, relax a little. If you're always on edge, you'll only be slow to react in a fight."
"That applies to the weak," Fugaku Uchiha retorted coldly. "The Uchiha's nerves will never break."
Nishikawa Tetsu followed silently behind, not participating in the conversation between the two.
His attention was completely focused on his surroundings.
If Fugaku Uchiha was using the Sharingan's insight to warn of the enemy, and Minato Namikaze was using a ninja's intuition to sense danger, then Toru Nishikawa was examining this battlefield with the eyes of a researcher.
The terrain changes significantly, transitioning from plains to hilly areas. The rocks are mostly shale and sandstone, which are structurally unstable and prone to landslides.
The wind mainly comes from the northwest, and when it passes through the canyon, it creates a funnel effect, doubling the wind speed.
This means that the range of kunai thrown against the wind will be reduced, while the power of fire-style attacks will increase when the wind is at your back.
Nishikawa Tetsu stopped and squatted down beside a rock wall, reaching out to touch the slippery moss on it.
"Hey! What are you doing now?"
Fugaku Uchiha appeared beside him in an instant, his brows furrowed, his tone full of impatience, "You were digging up grass roots just now, and now you're looking at moss? Nishikawa Toru, are you a tourist here?"
Minato Namikaze also stopped, looking at Tetsu with some concern: "Have you noticed something's wrong?"
"It's not that something's wrong, we're confirming the coordinates."
Nishikawa Tetsu stood up, shook the mud off his hands, and pointed to the patterns on the rock wall, saying, "This kind of moss only grows on the leeward side and is very sensitive to residual chakra. Look at this patch—"
He pointed to a slightly yellowish area.
"The moss in this area has withered and shows radial scorch marks. Although rainwater has washed away most of the marks, this is clearly not a natural occurrence."
Nishikawa Tetsu concluded: "About three days ago, a battle took place here. Someone used Lightning Release ninjutsu; the electricity traveled along the damp rock wall, killing the moss. Judging from the extent of the scorch marks, the caster's chakra level was at least Chunin."
Upon hearing this, Fugaku Uchiha's crimson pupils contracted slightly.
He took a few steps closer and carefully examined the almost imperceptible yellowish-brown mark.
Without Nishikawa Tetsu's reminder, even with his Sharingan, he could easily have overlooked such details while traveling at high speed.
"……snort."
Fugaku Uchiha's expression softened slightly, but he remained sharp-tongued. "You do have some cleverness. However, this kind of hindsight analysis is of no help in terms of immediate survival. The enemy is long gone."
"No, senior."
Nishikawa Tetsu shook his head, his gaze fixed on the narrow, deep canyon ahead. "This means this route is a common ambush point for Iwa ninja or Amegakure ninja. Lightning Release ninjas are usually skilled in surprise attacks and paralysis. If I were the commander, I would arrange for Earth Release ninjas to cooperate in blocking the road."
Fugaku Uchiha remained silent for a moment.
He gave the boy, whose chakra level was average, a deep look, and for the first time refrained from directly mocking him.
"Now that we know it's an ambush point, we need to get through it even faster."
Fugaku Uchiha turned around, placing his hand on his ninja tool pouch. "Full speed ahead, maintain the triangular formation. I'll be in front, Minato on the left, and Nishikawa Tetsu on the right. If we encounter the enemy..."
His eyes instantly turned sharp, radiating murderous intent.
"Forget tactics, just charge in!"
"Understood." Minato Namikaze's expression turned serious, and his sunny, youthful aura vanished instantly, replaced by the sharp edge of a ninja.
Nishikawa Tetsuya nodded, but secretly reached into his ninja tool bag and grabbed the few homemade weapons.
Charge straight in? That's a privilege reserved for geniuses like you.
Nishikawa Tetsu thought to himself.
For an ordinary person like me, of course, I have to resort to some despicable means.
The three transformed into three black shadows and rushed into the perilous canyon.
Rainwater cascaded down the rock face, gathering into a muddy stream at the bottom of the valley.
The towering cliffs on both sides completely blocked out the already dim light.
The wind howled mournfully here.
This terrain is practically made for ambushes.
As Nishikawa Tetsu ran, he rapidly constructed a three-dimensional model of the surroundings in his mind.
The echo frequency is incorrect.
Suddenly, Nishikawa Tetsu's brow twitched.
"Stop!"
Nishikawa Tetsuya suddenly let out a low shout.
"What is it now?" Although Fugaku Uchiha was still complaining, his body reacted instinctively, and he stopped moving instantly.
Minato Namikaze stopped almost simultaneously, looking around warily: "Che?"
Something's not right.
Nishikawa Tetsu stared intently at the seemingly empty pile of rocks ahead, explaining rapidly, "The wind ahead is scattering abnormally; there must be something unseen blocking the airflow... or rather, someone used chakra to alter the terrain!"
Before he could finish speaking...
"BOOM—!!!"
A loud bang seemed to confirm his suspicions.
The originally stable rock walls on both sides suddenly collapsed, and countless huge boulders mixed with mud crashed down on the small area where the three of them were with a devastating force!
That was not a natural landslide.
Behind the tumbling boulder, several figures wearing Iwa ninja headbands appeared and disappeared in the shadows, their hands forming earth-style hand seals.
"Earth Release: Rock Collapse!"
Fugaku Uchiha's face instantly turned extremely ugly.
"Damn it! It really was an ambush!"
But he didn't panic. His Sharingan spun wildly, and his hands completed hand seals in an instant.
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"
A huge fireball shot into the sky, trying to stop the falling rocks, but it was just a drop in the ocean compared to the several-ton rocks.
The battle broke out without warning in the canyon on this rainy night.
